FERNELEY MAY BYPASS LINCOLN

John Ferneley may be denied the chance of a repeat success in this year`s randombet.com Lincoln at Doncaster, it was revealed today.

Connections may instead drop the six-year-old, as short as 9-1 for the Lincoln with the Tote, down to six furlongs for the Cammidge Trophy on the same card a week on Saturday.

The last horse to win the traditional curtain-raiser to the Flat season in consecutive years was Babur, who landed the spoils in 1957 and 1958.

John Ferneley won the Lincoln last year for trainer Paul Cole, but is now in the care of Lynda Ramsden, who also has another former Cole inmate, Mastermind, in the Lincoln.

The trainer`s husband Jack Ramsden said today: 'John Ferneley might run in the six-furlong Listed race on Saturday.

'We`ve got two in the Lincoln and we don`t really want them to take each other on.

'We want to find out if John Ferneley will be effective over six furlongs - we feel he`s got plenty of speed.

'They are both rated high enough on 100.

'John Ferneley couldn`t win again after winning the Lincoln off 90 and Mastermind has only won a maiden.

'A lot will depend on the going so I would advise anyone thinking of having a bet to hold fire.'

The Ramsdens have returned to Britain this season after a brief spell in France and will have their first runners at the Lincoln meeting which starts next Thursday.

Ramsden added: 'We don`t really know the horses yet.

'It`s not as if we trained them last season and we are just feeling our way with them.

'We`ll have one or two runners on the Thursday but we haven`t made any entries yet.'
