Fabre to adopt patient approach with Baroud

Andre Fabre needs a bit more time to come up with a plan for his impressive Prix Guillaume d’Ornano winner Baroud.

The Frankel colt took a big step forward when winning the Group Two at Deauville, leaving the highly-regarded Daryzan and Aidan O’Brien’s French Derby third Montreal trailing in his wake.

Despite having a win over a mile and a half at Saint-Cloud on his record, Fabre, who now trains in Partnership with his daughter, Lavinia, does not believe he truly stays that distance yet so he is looking at options over 10 furlongs or even a mile.

“He doesn’t have many options because it was clear to me that he doesn’t stay a mile and a half. I think he will next year when he is more mature,” said Fabre.

“There aren’t that many options to be fair as he needs good ground. We’ve no plans as yet, until I discuss it with the owner (Imad Al Sagar).

“There are two obvious 10-furlong races, one in Ireland (Irish Champion Stakes) and one at Ascot (Champion Stakes) but he is not entered in either of those so it all needs to be discussed with his owner.

“He quickened up smartly, he’s a good horse, he could even go back to a mile.

“He did win over a mile and a half but it was a poor maiden at Saint-Cloud.”

A day later Fabre saw Zaraki bolt up by six lengths in the Listed Prix Nureyev but as a gelding, any potential Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe bid will have to wait at least a year.

“He was very impressive. He could go for the Prix Niel next but he’s a gelding,” said Fabre.

“He was very promising at two, one of my best two-year-olds, but we had to geld him as he had a problem with his testicles so he’s a little bit restricted where he can go.

“The Ascot race (Champion Stakes) may come a bit soon for him. I’ll probably go for the Prix Niel and then make a decision where he goes, the Breeders’ Cup could be another option.”

One of Fabre’s stalwarts who has not been seen since May is Sosie, the Hong Kong Vase winner.

Fabre said: “We’ve had some issues with him so at the moment he is isn’t working seriously. He’s still in training. He might go for a break soon.”
