Fallon set to cut back

Kieren Fallon looks set to join Frankie Dettori in withdrawing from the frenetic chase for the jockeys` championship in Britain.

He admits to being worn down by the travelling and volume of rides needed for a serious title challenge and plans to cut back his commitments from next year.

The Irishman is odds-on to regain the title this season, having been denied a fourth straight riders` crown by injury in 2000.

But he told BBC Radio Five Live: 'I think this will be my last year having a good go at it. I won`t say I`ll sit back but I won`t be dashing around.

'I won`t go to the Chepstows and Salisburys unless Sir Michael Stoute has runners there. I`ll change my policy and save myself for the big day.

'I`ve won it three times and I looked odds-on last year until I got injured. But it isn`t easy doing two meetings a day. It`s very exhausting.'

Dettori was champion jockey in 1994 and 1995, riding well over 200 winners each year, but he has put quality before quantity in recent seasons and cut back on his rides.

Five-times champion jockey Willie Carson has insisted that jockeys like Kieren Fallon will continue to go all-out for championship glory despite the physical and mental demands made by an ever-increasing quantity of fixtures.

Carson said: 'If you`re in the job, you`ve just got to do it.

'But believe me, if they`re in with a shout at the championship, they`ll give it everything, it`s just human nature to do so.'

He also suggested that a holiday might freshen Fallon up for the end of the season.

'To be honest I would slow down after Glorious Goodwood when it comes to the night racing, in fact I have taken a week off after Glorious Goodwood,' said Carson.

'Pat (Eddery) isn`t as young as he was and he`s still showing these young men how to be professional. I don`t think I ever rode on a Saturday night and I certainly never, ever rode on the all-weather.'
