Joseph O’Brien and JP McManus gained some compensation for the earlier defeat of Landofhopeandglory at Leopardstown when Aeglos landed the Lep Inn Flat Race.

The Mahler gelding was ably handled by Scottish amateur Tom Hamilton, who has joined the O’Brien team at Piltown this year and was recording his first winner in Ireland.

The 8/1 chance quickened clear early in the straight, and kept up the gallop to score by four lengths. Mr Champers took the runner-up spot, while the red-hot favourite Midnight Escape (4/5 from 7/4) was a further three lengths adrift in third.

O’Brien said, “We always thought plenty of him but he was a bit weak last season. J J (Slevin) rode him the last day at Fairyhouse and said things just happened wrong for him.

“I’m delighted for Tom. He works in the yard, and I think that could be his last winner as a 7lb claimer.

“He could go for a winners bumper, and probably won’t go over hurdles until next season.”
