Simon Madden of Max Bloodstock has cast his eye over this week’s Arqana Breeze Up Sale and has arrived at a short list of five lots he considers worthy of closer examination depending on the times they clock for their Breeze Ups.

Lot 72 | Sioux Nation ex Obama Alexander (Profitable) | Filly | Station Yard*

Pedigree Comments: A chestnut filly, but don’t let that put you off as there are plenty of good ones around. Dam only ran once, but as a half-sister to Group 1 performer Insinuendo, her offspring will naturally attract attention.

From a pedigree perspective, what makes this filly interesting is that her damsire is Profitable. He has had very few runners to date as a damsire, but he is by Invincible Spirit, and some of his other sons have done very well as the damsire when nicked with sons of Scat Daddy.

Impressive 2yo Velozee (Sioux Nation) has Territories (Invincible Spirit) as damsire, and 95 rated First Approach (No Nay Never) has Lawman (Invincible Spirit) as damsire. Lest we also forget that both Blackbeard and Charles Darwin (No Nay Never) are both out of the Born To Sea (Invincible Spirit) mare, Muirin. It might just be worth siding with Profitable as a damsire when nicked with Sioux Nation.

*One of the standout consignors in 2025 in data terms.

Lot 82 | Sioux Nation ex Porthilly (Pivotal) | Filly | Glending Stables

Pedigree Comments: Another chestnut filly to contend with for the superstitious amongst us, but pacy dam was a Listed winner (6f) and Group-placed (5f), and achieved an RPR of 104. Despite only doing reasonably at stud so far, producing one winner from a handful of foals, what really stands out is the Sioux Nation X Pivotal damsire cross which combined to produce the Group 2 (Rockfel) winning Zanthos (OR111) last year, and the 91 rated Engines On before this.

Late April foal so chances are that this filly will be physically immature, but look out for decent time. As noted, a quick time might just be an above average talent marker.

Lot 86 | Harry Angel ex Purple Magic (Rip Van Winkle) | Colt | Donovan Bloodstock

Pedigree Comments: A sire who still flies under the radar somewhat but who has posted some decent returns from his 2025 breeze-up class, with 8 sold (med. €52k), 5 runners, 4 winners, 2 of whom are now rated 80+.

Winning dam was good on the flat over staying distances (OR94), and is 2 from 2 at stud on a winners to runners basis. However, what really appeals for this colt is the Rip Van Winkle damsire element, one of whose better horses to date as the damsire is the 102 rated Tiger Bay. His sire just happens to be….Harry Angel.

Indeed, the Group 1 placed White Lavender (OR108) whose damsire is also Rip Van Winkle is by another son of Dark Angel in Heeraat.

This cross has big potential.

Lot 172 | Hello Youmzain ex Baileys Breathless (Pivotal) | Colt | ML Bloodstock

Pedigree Comments: Another Pivotal mare (not a bad thing at all of course) who won over 6f (achieved OR77), and comes from a family that is all speed. The family does probably lack the depth in class that will be on show elsewhere in the catalogue, so might come in under the radar. A January foal so he should be physically mature.

Much like Sioux Nation with a Pivotal mare, this nick also has potential having combined well to produce other decent runners in the form of Persian Wonder, Rainbow Nebula and Feve. With maturity likely on his side, added to a speedy sire crossed with a speedy mare, this colt is worth noting if he can breeze well.

Lot 185 | Sioux Nation ex Chicas Amigas (Dragon Pulse) | Colt | Leamore Horses

Pedigree Comments: Black-type dam was obviously talented, running to an OR of 94 over sprint distances in her pomp, and has done well at stud with 2 winners from 2 runners under her name. However, the family is not deep on black-type runners, and you have to go back to the 4th dam before they appear in numbers, so he may evade the heavy hitters, unless he breaks the clock.

While the sire does better in the round with his fillies, what is particularly noteworthy about this colt is that his damsire is Dragon Pulse, whose best horse to date as damsire is the 106 rated Battle Cry. He happens to be by another son of Scat Daddy in No Nay Never.

Another lot for whom the nick is brimming with potential, and a reasonable clocked time would make him very interesting.
