Flat jockey Spencer claims Cheltenham success

Jamie Spencer, one of the brightest young stars on the Flat scene, added a rather unusual string to his bow when landing the Weatherbys Champion Bumper aboard Pizarro at Cheltenham today.

Spencer emerged on top from a fantastic duel between himself and Norman Williamson, aboard hot favourite Rhinestone Cowboy (5-2), to give Ireland yet another win in the contest.

'This is very special because my father George won the Champion Hurdle here 39 years ago with Winning Fair,' said Spencer.

'I begged Mr O`Grady for the ride and this is a smashing horse which has won on merit and I`m very relieved we kept the prize.'

The race developed into a three-way fight turning into the straight with Back In Front just heading the trio.

He couldn`t find any more, however, two furlongs out and the three soon became two.

Pizarro (14-1) and Rhinestone Cowboy went at it hammer and tongs and at one point it looked as though Williamson`s horse would prevail. But Spencer gathered his mount up and pushed him out hands and heels close home to come out on top by a neck.

Back In Front (12-1) finished three-and-a-half-lengths behind the pair to give trainer Edward O`Grady the first and third.
