Trainer Pat Flynn got off the mark for the new season at the Curragh today, landing the 1xBet.ie Proudly Supporting Irish Racing Mile Handicap with progressive Key Witness (16/1) under 7lb claimer Alan Persse.

Bought from UK-based trainer Archie Watson for 15,000gns last July, the 83-rated son of Acclamation finished second and then won on his initial two starts for Flynn last year and today returned to the Kildare course for his third Irish start.

Under a light weight of 8st 5lb, Key Witness held on in the closing stages for an all-out pair-of-short-heads success over both Diego El Queso and Lady Lilac .

Flynn reported “This is a very nice horse. Myself and my wife Catherine were in Newmarket (at the sales) looking at all the horses and the next thing this one passed by, and I said to Catherine ‘that’s a racehorse’ so we went in and bought him.

“He’s by a very good sire and we’re delighted. This is his first run of the year and he did it the hard way, from a bad draw. He’ll probably get a few pounds for that and we’ll go for the big-ish handicaps with him over seven furlongs to a mile.”
