Fontwell holds last hope for Sunday Fontwell is the only Turf track remaining in Britain and Ireland that could yet hold a meeting on St Stephen's Day, although the fixture is subject to an 11am inspection on Christmas Day. The track is covered and, while they are fit to race at present, clerk of the course Ed Arkell will assess conditions on Saturday in light of a cold forecast. "At the moment we are perfectly raceable under the covers and it only got down to minus 1.5C last night which is really good news," he said on Christmas Eve. "It is a sunny day here today and is forecast to get up to 3C, which compared to recent days is fantastic, and then we are forecast a low of minus 4C overnight. "Christmas Day is due to be around 0C with possible overnight temperatures of minus 5C or 6C so we have called an inspection for tomorrow. "It would be silly not to to have a look really and it's important to keep everyone in touch with what's going on." Ten Turf meetings, including three in Ireland, were originally scheduled for Sunday, but Fontwell plus an all-weather fixture at Wolverhampton are the only two still in with a chance to race.
