Former tearaway Miradane upsets the odds

The Low Low Handicap Hurdle proved a high point for bookmakers at Cork as Miradane recorded a 20/1 shock in this two-mile event.

The Mouse Morris-trained gelding was prominent throughout but looked cooked as top-weight Bendanella was produced with what appeared a winning run at the penultimate flight.

However the seven-year-old son of Kayf Tara was back on terms at the last, and stayed on to such effect on the run-in under Mark Enright that he had five and a half lengths to spare at the line.

The 9/10 favourite Stay With It could find no extra after two out in the testing heavy ground, and finished a further five lengths adrift in third.

Enright said, “He settled a lot better today as he’s usually a bit of a tearaway.

“I was fairly confident even when the other horse came to me as my fella was getting a bit lonely in front.”
