Fortune offered Balding job

Jockey Jimmy Fortune could be on the verge of replacing the man who replaced him as stable jockey to John Gosden, after trainer Andrew Balding revealed that he has asked the Classic-winning rider to take on the role made vacant by William Buick.

An upbeat Fortune, who was informed by Gosden on Wednesday that he had lost his stable jockey job to the former joint champion apprentice, spoke positively about his future on Thursday, and predicted that parting from his long-time boss would do him "the world of good".

Fortune said: "I've had quite a few offers this morning and I've been really flattered by the response I've had from trainers and owners wishing to give me their support.

"Andrew has just lost a good jockey and he wants to get a good jockey, but I haven't really had time to think about it. I have said to everyone that I'm going to take a couple of weeks out and think about whether I want to take a job or go freelance.

"I'm quite a positive person and there are plenty of good horses and plenty of trainers out there. A good job can be great and it does give you security, but it also ties you down, especially when you get to the big meetings and there are good spare rides flying around."
