The first-time blinkered Shannon Royale made the running in the SBK Novice Handicap Hurdle and, after kicking on turning into the straight, looked to have his pursuers in trouble on the approach to the final flight.

Several rivals picked up well, though, to close on the leader after the last and 2/1 favourite Morricone in receipt of 21lbs, got to the front close home under Darragh O'Keeffe to score by half a length from Shannon Royale. Right on their heels in third and fourth were Petit King and Chosen Thyme

Bred by Danny and Patrick Mullins, this was a third success of the season for the Shantou seven-year-old who is trained by Ray Hackett.

“It helped that they didn’t go a mad gallop early as he was stepping back up in trip, but he’s seen it out great," said Hackett.

"Darragh gave him a fantastic ride and I’m delighted for the boys (Ballyvara Racing Syndicate) who are all here again.

“He handles this place and when the ground gets nicer I think he’ll go that little bit further.

“The Full Circle Series here at the Festival will be our next target and hopefully he gets in.

“He has a great attitude and is tough and hardy.”
