Gangsta Man (9/1 - 6/1) made the breakthrough for Kevin Smith at the 12th time of asking in the Athlone Handicap at Roscommon.

Wesley Joyce 's mount was soon locked together at the head of affairs with Great Mover and Billy Lee who took over entering the straight.

When Great Mover came under pressure, Gangsta Man was able to take over a furlong and a-half from home.

Joyce asked his partner for more as Northern Attitude (22/1) launched her challenge a furlong down. The pursuer couldn't get on terms, though, and was half a length in arrears at the line. Moonhall Lass the 11/2 favourite, completed the placings in third.

Joyce said: “He likes to go forward, and I thought some of his best runs were when he was up with the pace.

“I said to Kevin 'I definitely want to be in the first two' and it worked out.

“When I asked him to pick up he did and went on well.”
