Gavin Cromwell reveals that Flooring Porter has been retired: 'It was a great journey'

William Hill ambassador Gavin Cromwell reveals that Flooring Porter has been retired.

The now 11-year-old won the Stayers’ Hurdle in 2021, when beating Sire Du Berlais, and followed up 12 months later, accounting for Thyme Hill, with Danny Mullins in the saddle on both occasions.

Mullins also rode when he was fourth in 2023, while Keith Donoghue was aboard when he was second to Teahupoo in 2024.

Speaking to William Hill, Cromwell said: “Flooring Porter unfortunately had a reoccurrence of a niggly injury and, at his age, we think it’s the right decision to retire him.

"He is retiring in great health and he’s as bright as a button. I’m sure he’ll have a happy retirement. He’s on his way down to the owners and he’s been a very special horse for them, so I’m sure they’ll give him a happy retirement.

“He won three Grade 1s and the Kerry National, but I think the second Stayers’ Hurdle was my personal highlight. The first one was during lockdown, and the second one was our first Cheltenham back after COVID, so it was special for everyone. The owners got to be there the second time and that really topped off the week.

“The Kerry National was very special as well for the celebrations. He was owned by a group of lads that adored him and celebrated him. They got a lot of joy out of him, as did I. It was a great journey.”
