Geordieland to return in 2011

Geordieland is to be put away for 2011 after an injury prevented him from tackling any of the major staying prices this year.

His trainer Jamie Osborne believes the nine-year-old still retains plenty of ability and is looking to aim him at Royal Ascot's Gold Cup in which he has been placed three times.

"We were ready for York (Lonsdale Cup) but he picked up an injury 10 days beforehand which meant he couldn't run," Osborne told At The Races.

"By the time we got that right there was nothing left for him to run in so his season is over and it was non-existent, but he was going well enough prior to York, showing no real signs of enormous deterioration.

"His work had been very good, so it's very disappointing for all involved that he wasn't able to run this year, but he could come back next year as a 10-year-old. It's not impossible, If he was a National Hunt horse you wouldn't think twice about it.

"We are going to have another go. I don't think the injury he sustained this year is going to hinder him going forward and if we get a good clean run with him next year, we'll have another go at the Ascot Gold Cup."
