George's only offspring wins on debut

Date With Destiny, the only foal of the ill-fated George Washington, made the perfect start to her racing career at Newbury this evening.

Fairly weak in the betting, the Richard Hannon-trained youngster was sent off at 9-2 for the Christal Management EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes but travelled like the winner from a very early stage having missed the break slightly.

Richard Hughes sat motionless to a furlong and a half out, and although a little green when asked for her effort, she readily picked up to account for the front-running Zanazzi by a length and a half.

Not unlike her father in facial features with a striking white blaze, the front three were a mile clear of the fourth and her future looks bright.

A multiple Group One winner, George Washington suffered fertility problems at stud and was returned to training, but tragedy struck when he suffered a fatal injury in the 2007 Breeders' Cup Classic at Monmouth Park.
