Glover hits jackpot at Curragh

English trainer Jeremy Glover enjoyed his most valuable success with Bella Chica in the #200,000 Tattersalls Breeders Stakes at the Curragh today.

Patiently ridden by local jockey Fran Berry, the 12-1 chance swooped to catch Partytime, who was bidding to give Richard Hannon his sixth win in a row in the six-furlong dash, before running on to score by a length.

The David Nicholls-trained Lord Merlin, the 3-1 favourite, was a neck back in third to complete a clean sweep for British trainers.

'This is only my second runner in Ireland, Promised having run seventh in this race last year, and it is the biggest prize we have won at #98,000 to the winner,' enthused Glover, who bought the filly for 13,000gns on behalf of the five members of the Carlton Partnership from Nottingham.

'I have won the Cambridgeshire four times and a couple of Group and Listed races but this is a great thrill. Fran Berry did exactly as I told him - hold her up for a late run.'

Berry said later that hehad tracked the eventual runner-up Partytime from the start.

'My filly was always travelling and picked up well when we challenged Partytime into the final furlong,' said Berry.

Hawk Wing earned a 16-1 quote from the Tote for the Sagitta 2000 Guineas when easily winning the King of Kings Futurity Stakes.

And the 7-4 favourite was also giving a boost to his stablemate, the Gimcrack winner, Rock Of Gibraltar who had beaten him over this course on his previous start.

Travelling strongly as his stable companion Sholokhov made the running, the Aidan O`Brien-trained colt glided past his opponents under Michael Kinane approaching the final furlong.

Her came home three lengths clear of Sholokhov with Stage Call another two lengths away third.

'Michael was very impressed - he couldn`t believe how easily Hawk Wing picked them off,' said O`Brien, who had four winners at the York Ebor meeting this week.

'Hawk Wing will probably come back here in three weeks for the Aga Khan`sStuds National Stakes, and we may also run Sholokhov as well again.

Mark Johnston`s lone English rider Leo`s Luckyman faded in the closing stages to finish last of the six runners on ground that rode 'quite dead' according to his jockey Michael Hills.

Vinnie Row earned a crack at either the English or Irish St Leger in three weeks` time when defeating the odds-on Pugin over the course and distance of the final Irish Classic.

Despite a 3lb penalty Pat Smullen`s mount battled tenaciously in the finish of the day to deny Pugin by a head.

Winning trainer Dermot Weld was full of praise for the winner.

He said: 'This is a tough and thoroughly genuine colt and Pat was at his strongest on him.

'I thought twice about running this horse because the 3lb penalty picked up at Leopardstown and we will make a decision next week whether to go to Doncaster or come back here for the Smurfit St Leger.'

An hour earlier Weld and Smullen had to be content with a triple dead-heat for third with 3-1 joint-favourite Cool Clarity in the Belgrave Stakes.

Despite being easy to back, Ishiguru came out on top in a blanket finish.

'Ishiguru has lots of speed and six furlongs on that ground was probably as far as he needs to go,' said O`Brien after the Danzig colt D`Anjou by a head.

'The plan now is to drop him back to five furlongs in the Prix de l`Abbaye at Longchamp.'
