Godolphin Up For The Cup

Godolphin are looking to St Leger runner-up The Geezer and Cherry Mix to improve their already impressive record in the Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup on Friday week.

The Dubai operation has plundered the Knavesmire Group Two contest several times in the past and they once again have a strong hand with four entries.

'For the Yorkshire Cup we are looking at The Geezer and we are also looking at Cherry Mix,' said Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford.

'The Geezer in the last six weeks has really started to do very well, we are pleased with him.

'He had a very quiet winter and it was only in the last few weeks before we left Dubai that he turned the corner and really started going forward.

'So he's a horse we are interested in for the Yorkshire Cup.

'We are in a little bit of a quandary over what distance to run him over because he's got great form over a whole range of trips.

'The question was whether we'd be starting him off over a mile and a half, mile and six or shorter but of all the older horses we have he seems the most likely type to go this type of distance (mile and six furlongs) and perform well.

'We are happy enough with him right now and we'll see how he gets on before deciding whether to drop him back in trip or keep him to that distance or even go up in that distance.

'Since he was second in the Arc, Cherry Mix has been slightly below form, although he did win a Group One in Italy last year.

'There are no excuses for his performances of late, he just lacked a little bit of speed over middle distances against the very best horses.

'If he wasn't capable of winning King Georges or running really competitively in the big races it was always the aim to stretch him out a little bit further because they can be softer options for a horse like him.

'He goes best with cut in the ground.'
