Godolphin one-two at Doncaster Mastery provided Godolphin with a fifth victory in the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster. Saeed bin Suroor's second string, ridden by Ted Durcan, led home stablemate Kite Wood, the mount of Frankie Dettori. Godolphin were securing a first English Group One victory of the season. It was also the first time Sheikh Mohammed's team had tasted British Classic glory since Rule Of Law won the Leger five years ago. Although connections had earlier this week voiced concerns about the fast ground on Town Moor, Kite Wood was nonetheless sent off the 9-4 favourite. Those fears seemed unfounded once Dettori went clear of the pacemaking Von Jawlensky approaching the two-furlong marker. A huge cheer cascaded inside the grandstand as punters anticipated Dettori claiming his sixth victory in the Leger. They had not counted on the verve of Mastery and the will to win of his underrated rider, however. The 14-1 shot became embroiled in an almighty tussle with Kite Wood, but Durcan always looked on top of proceedings inside the final 500 yards. Although Dettori's partner refused to wilt in the Yorkshire sunshine, the Italian Derby winner found a shade more under pressure to score by three-quarters of a length. Monitor Closely, who was supplemented for the race to the tune of 45,000, came from the rear to take third, another length and three-quarters back. Durcan said: "Sheikh Mohammed and everyone have been a huge help to me over the years. "Him (Kite Wood) and I had the run of the race. "This horse has loved the ground and stays really well." Sheikh Mohammed, speaking about his long wait for a Group One winner, said: "These are horses, not machines. "They're flesh and blood and sometimes you have problems with them."
