Good omen for Kinane

Michael Kinane, who must succeed in an appeal at the Turf Club today if he is to be cleared to ride at Ascot this weekend, had a winner at Naas this evening on his only mount, Stonemason.

The locally-based former champion jockey made no mistake aboard the colt from the Aidan O`Brien stable despite the horse drifting alarmingly in the betting.

Put in initially at 1-3, the son of Nureyev drifted right out to 6-4 before attracting late support to 11-10 and winning with a little to spare.

Stonemason moved to the front over a furlong out and was always going too strongly for the runner-up Fashion Guide.

Stonemason is jointly owned by Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Hong Kong-based Paul Kan for whom Kinane rode Que Sera Sera to win the Derby there couple of years ago.

'I was delighted to win on Stonemason when Mr Kan was here with his family both to see the race and to visit my farm down the road where the horse is having a happy retirement,' said Kinane.
