John Gosden is eager to run Jack Hobbs in this afternoon's Investec Derby but will be guided by the best interests of the colt.

The ground at Epsom is reported to be good, good to firm in places and Gosden has made clear his concerns about a quick surface for his charge, who chased home stablemate Golden Horn in the Dante on his most recent outing.

Gosden said: "The ground is drying up for him a bit which isn't ideal, but it's going to be a stunningly beautiful day on the Epsom Downs so that's great for everybody there."

The handler went on: "I'm going to walk the track before and as long as I'm happy with it, we will go ahead and run. I very much want to run the horse but I will walk the full mile and a half beforehand to do my due diligence.

"I'll do what's right by the horse, but I would like to walk the track first just to be sure. The ground was perfect yesterday but there has been quite a lot of drying and sunny weather, right through until race time at 4.30pm."
