Gowran ready for centenary celebrations Gowran Park are gearing up for a memorable day later this month as the course celebrates it's centenary year and also the 60th anniversary of the Thyestes Chase. The Goffs sponsored Grade A handicap is the biggest national hunt race in track's calendar with a prize pool of €100,000. The race was most famously won by Arkle in 1964 while in recent years it has been a important National trial with winners including Hedgehunter and Numbersixvalverde. Also on the undercard on Thursday January 23rd while be the John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle. The €40,000 contest has been won in recent years by Zaidpour and Gold Cup hero War of Attrition. The course will also stage a Most Stylish Lady competition, on the day, which carries a luxury €1,500 Kilkenny city centre shopping & leisure prize comprising a €500 voucher for Peaches the boutique, a €500 voucher for Murphy Jewellers and a €500 stay & dine package for the Pembroke Hotel. The competition will be judged by international model and Kilkenny native Karen Fitzpatrick. The winner will be announced from the parade ring before the Goffs Thyestes Chase at approx. 3.15pm. Other attractions on the day will include a champagne tent from where the Most Stylish Lady competition will be judged, several catering offerings and a series of live music acts. They include Liam Byrne (Christy Moore Tribute) in the Miller Marquee, Marcus Prouse (Garth Brooks Tribute) in the Platinum Bar and Pete Fagan & DJ ( Middle Floor Bar). “This year is the centenary of Gowran Park Race Course and 60 years since the Thyestes cup was first presented to GowranPark. The Goffs Thyestes Chase takes place at Gowran Park Race Course on Thursday 23rd January. Gates will open at 11am and the first race takes place at 1.15pm.
