Grand National Festival: What’s the dress code at Aintree? Aintree’s Grand National Festival isn’t quite in the midst of the summer months like Royal Ascot, but the April weather is usually warm enough to get dressed up and have a good time. The top-class racing is matched by the brilliant atmosphere and there’s nothing like the hospitality of the north. If you’ve never been to Aintree before, this could be the year. One of the most frequently asked questions is with regards to the dress code. Here is everything you need to know about what’s allowed and not allowed at Aintree. Official dress code Officially there isn’t a dress code at the Grand National meeting, but that being said, fancy dress is not allowed. You should also avoid wearing team colours and sports kit but other than that, feel free to come as you are. Dress to impress Whilst it’s not a requirement for entry, many racegoers use the opportunity to look their best as it all adds to the experience. All of horse racing’s big festivals are synonymous with fashion and Aintree’s Grand National Festival is no different. Most racegoers are smartly dressed throughout the three days but Ladies’ Day is often the highlight on the fashion front. Formal wear is the name of the game and dresses and jump suits are amongst the most commonly worn items amongst the ladies. It’s advised that you dress appropriately for the weather as it’s far from 30°C in April but the worst of the cold weather is usually behind us. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the weather forecasts, as dry weather can never be guaranteed in Britain. Whilst it’s a little bit harder for men to stand out from the crowd, a good suit can certainly help you to do so. As it’s a National Hunt meeting, you will never look out of place in tweed and you can always add a Trilby hat to that and good for the Willie Mullins look! Hopefully the sun shines across the Merseyside track though, as there’s no better sight than Aintree bathed in sunlight.
