Grugy a possible for Sandown

Ground conditions will dictate whether Sire De Grugy will sign off his season in the bet365 AP McCoy Celebration Chase at Sandown on Saturday week.

The 2014 Champion Chase hero capped a tremendous campaign with victory in the Grade One contest on the final day of last season, but he has endured a largely disappointing year.

The nine-year-old lost his Champion Chase crown after a tame effort at Cheltenham last month and only made it as far as the sixth fence in the Melling Chase at Aintree on Friday.

Trainer Gary Moore said: " The vet checked him over and couldn't find anything wrong with him, so we worked him for the first time (since Aintree) this morning and he seems fine.

"We'll just wait and see what the weather does.

"He could go to Sandown if the ground is right."

If Sire De Grugy does head for Sandown, he will require another change of rider.

Regular partner Jamie Moore suffered a broken leg in a pre-race fall at Towcester at the start of the month and his brother Joshua suffered a broken collarbone during the Melling.

"Josh is just waiting to see the specialist and then they'll decide whether he needs an operation or not," said the West Sussex trainer.

"If we do go to Sandown, I'll just use the best (jockey) available."

Asked whether Tony McCoy could be a possible candidate for the ride in a race that has been named in his honour and on a day which is set to bring his glittering career to an end, Moore said: " It would be nice to have him, but he probably wouldn't want to ride him now!

"I'd be very nervous about him getting injured on one of my horses on his last day."
