Trainer Micky Hammond insisted Joe Colliver will have a job to return to when the rider, who was jailed on Friday, completes his sentence.

Colliver, 25, was jailed for 10 months by a judge at Teesside Crown Court for lying about the circumstances of a car crash in the early hours of Boxing Day last year and paying a friend to take the blame

Middleham-based Hammond said: "He's broken the law of the land and has to pay the penalty, no ifs and buts. He's been foolish, because he's a grand lad and has a promising career.

"He's a promising young jockey, he joined us straight from racing school and I've never had any problems with him. We all make mistakes, but you can't break the law of the land. He has plenty of talent, but it's about being professional.

"I'd expect him to come back to the yard and work full-time, he's just been riding out but he needs just two winners to lose his claim and I'd expect him to work full-time and get his career back on track.

"He's been punished, but there's a job here for him when he comes back and I'd expect him to work extra hard. He has a good, strong network of people around him and that will help."

British Horseracing Authority spokesman Robin Mounsey said: "It has been agreed that Joe Colliver's licence will be relinquished as a result of his imprisonment. Should be wish to reapply in future his application would be assessed on its merits at that time."
