No less than four horses were ruled out of the featured Denny Hurdle in Down Royal and it was Happy Jacky (2/1) who got the measure of the remainder.

Peter Smithers set a good pace off the front in this three miler, but they were joined by Tullybeg and Jack Kennedy before two out and headed in jumping that flight.

Smithers drove him back into a narrow lead on the run-in which he held by a neck at the line over Tullybeg (5/1).

The winner didn't return to the winners enclosure and went to the stableyard to cool down as is customary with him.

Peter Smithers said: "That's the usual, he goes to the stableyard after a race due to overheating - best thing for him.

"That's what we did (set out to make it a test) and the quick ground as well, we didn't want it to turn into a sprint. We said we would stretch them good and early and turn it into a stamina test, and it worked out in the end.

"For the age of him, 11 years of age, but you'd swear he is getting younger because he is as tough as nails!

"Mark (Fahey) does a great job with him and knows him inside out."
