Head-Maarek hails retiring Treve Criquette Head-Maarek feels Treve has earned an honourable retirement after coming up short in her bid for an historic third victory in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. The brilliant mare was an odds-on favourite to gallop into the record books by winning the Longchamp showpiece once more, but while the dream was alive as she turned for home still travelling powerfully, she was ultimately no match for the impressive Golden Horn and passed the post a creditable fourth. Connections called time on Treve's career after she defended her Arc crown 12 months ago, only to later reverse the decision to retire, but it seems there will be no change of heart this time around. Head-Maarek said: "She deserves to be retired. Trying another year, it won't give her anything. She's won two Arcs already, six Group Ones, and she deserves to be retired. "If anything would happen to her, I would be really sad, so I'd rather see her go and have a good life and make babies and I hope Sheikh Joaan (owner) will send me one." The Chantilly handler was keen to praise Frankie Dettori for his fantastic ride aboard the winner. Although retained by Sheikh Joaan, the popular Italian was replaced as the rider of Treve with her old ally Thierry Jarnet at the request of Head-Maarek after suffering successive defeats last year. "We were a bit far away, but the horse who won is a very good horse and Dettori rode the perfect race," she said. "He had a good horse, he rode the perfect race and he won. Well done to them."
