Heffernan goes close at Southwell

Seamie Heffernan came close to partnering a winner at Southwell as he continues to enjoy his winter sojourn from riding in Ireland.

The jockey has been attached to Aidan O'Brien and Coolmore for 14 years and has ridden numerous big-race winners for the operation, including Classic victories on the likes of Soldier Of Fortune and Septimus.

After guiding Riflessione to finish second in Southwell's five-furlong handicap, he said: "I didn't take a job overseas (for the winter) this year and I'm currently based in Newmarket.

"I'm happy to ride out and ride for anybody who wants me.

"I've been to Southwell before and I like riding here as they normally go a good gallop and that means the best horse normally wins.

"I came over when Aidan worked Galileo and Mozart round here as well. We brought them to have a trip on the plane and a bit of sand in their face."

Following the resignation of Johnny Murtagh, Coolmore are currently without a number one jockey, but Heffernan is currently happy with his lot.

"It's great to be part of it. I've got a great job and I really enjoy what I'm doing," Heffernan told At The Races.

"They really look after me so I'm not going to be greedy. I'll take everything that's given to me and we'll see what happens.

"When they call me I jump - that's the way it is."
