Reese Holohan closed the gap on Sam Coen at the head of the apprentice jockeys' championship today, steering Coincidental Glory (9/2f) to win Navan's Christmas Parties At Navan Racecourse 5th & 13th December Handicap.

Racing behind the leaders on the stands' side, Holohan eventually produced Coincidental Glory with a last gasp-success, scoring by a nose from Another Nce'day .

The win moves Holohan to 24 wins this season, two behind suspended Sam Coen at the head of the apprentice jockeys' title, with just five race meetings remaining.

Afterwards winning trainer Ado McGuinness revealed "I'd say Sam (Coen) is cursing me because he would have been riding this horse, so it is his loss but Reese's gain. They are two great lads and the title race is going down to the wire. Sam has ridden a lot of winners for me over the past couple of years and a good result would be a draw!"

He added "this horse had gone 15 runs without a win, and I won't tell you what I was saying about the handicapper! He gave him 1lb for finishing third at the Curragh last week so that's why we are back today, as he was going up to 61 and out of this (0-60) grade.

“I was sort of forced to run as it is great to have him in this grade. He has run a blinder, needed the 5lb (Holohan's claim) off and when these types of horses get into this grade, it is easier for them.

"He came home well on ground he wouldn't love and is far better on fast ground. He has a higher rating on the all-weather, so we'll see.”
