Tom Mullins is still optimistic Alderwood could return to action this spring.

The nine-year-old is a dual Cheltenham Festival winner, having landed the County Hurdle in 2012 and the Grand Annual last year, but his season so far has not gone according to plan.

He finished a well-beaten fourth on his return to action at Naas at the end of October and has since been sidelined by injury.

Mullins has already called time on running Alderwood in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham next week, but he could still make the frame for a big prize in April.

The trainer told the Irish Times: "It's a pity for everyone but he seems to be on the mend and if he's ready in time we could think about Fairyhouse and Punchestown."
