The Irish Derby at the Curragh takes place this weekend as the County Kildare venue stages one of the most sought-after races in the calendar.

The Irish Derby takes high rank among Europe's most coveted three-year-old races, and the Curragh Classic has a rich and fabled history.

As the 2025 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby gets set to unfold at the Curragh on Sunday, we are taking a look at some trends that might help identify the latest winner based on what has happened since 2003, taking into account key stats over the previous 22 years of the Curragh Classic.

  • Irish Derby trends

  • Aidan O'Brien has won the Irish Derby 16 times, including 14 times in the last 22 years.

  • The Ballydoyle supremo has accounted for the previous two winners, Auguste Rodin and Los Angeles.

  • Ryan Moore has ridden those two winners, his only Irish Derby successes to date.

  • Seamie Heffernan (4) and William Buick (2) are the only other active jockeys with multiple Irish Derby wins.

  • All of the last 22 Irish Derby winners had run within the previous five weeks before their Curragh success.

  • All but three of the last 22 Irish Derby favourites have finished in the top four.

  • 18 of the last 22 winners have been trained in Ireland.

  • Hurricane Run (2005, Andre Fabre), Jack Hobbs (2015, John Gosden), Hurricane Lane (2021, Charlie Appleby) and Westover (2022, Ralph Beckett) are the exceptions, providing three British-based winners and one for France.

  • 16 of the last 22 winners had previously contested the Derby. The one-two-three from this year's Epsom Classic — Lambourn Lazy Griff and Tennessee Stud — are all expected to run at the Curragh.

  • 11 of the last 22 winners had been placed in the Derby, including four winners: Auguste Rodin, Harzand, Australia and Camelot.

  • 15 of the last 22 Irish Derby winners had never previously raced at the Curragh, while the same number had failed to win their previous race.

  • The front of the market tends to produce the winner, with 18 of the last 22 successful returning SPs of 6/1 or shorter and 17 in that sequence having come from the top three in the betting.

  • 18 of the previous 22 Irish Derby winners had previously won at Group-race level, though only five of those were at Group 1 level.

  • Only once in the last 22 years has Aidan O'Brien not had a top-three finisher, in 2022 when his sole runner, Tuesday, finished fourth.

  • O'Brien has saddled the first three home in the Irish Derby on eight separate occasions and has run at least four in the race 19 times. He accounts for five of the remaining ten Irish Derby entries this time.
