Island McCoo (16/1) came home strongly to make the breakthrough in the West Waterford Handicap Steeplechase on Tramore's card.

A trip of an extended 2m5f proved right up his street as he came through to lead over two out and galloped home well to see it out by two lengths in the hands of Philip Donovan. Wyoming Baby (9/2) couldn't get to him in second, but was seven-and-a-half-lengths clear of Gold Haven (9/2).

He had previously been placed once at Roscommon last summer and this was a marked improvement on his three performances since December.

Darren Collins said: "He ran a nice race the last day at Limerick (in seventh) and we thought that he'd run a nice race here today. We thought that the ground had kind of gone for him because it's a little bit soft, but he seemed to be happy enough on it.

"The owners do a good bit of work with him, they get him going for me and then send him down. His owners kind of tell me what to do with him, they are good men, they know where to go and they told me to come down here. It took me four hours, but they told me to come! We had one finish third earlier as well, so it's all good.

"That's my fourth winner now and I have 10 in at the moment. I have more for the summer, as the tracks near me are all back on."
