Jockey Angle: 'William Buick is a top-class jockey but he got this ride very badly wrong' If you backed Talk Of New York at Goodwood, you would probably feel aggrieved by the ride William Buick gave the horse. This is the opinion of jockey coach and former jockey Paddy Flood who analysed the ride on the latest episode of The Jockey Angle. Race replays are FREE to watch from all Irish tracks and a selection of premier British tracks sponsored by William Hill. Paddy Flood’s Analysis William Buick is a top-class jockey, but in my opinion, he got this one wrong. There has been a lot of talk recently about pacemakers, particularly Ballydoyle using them, and this race had a pacemaker for a reason. In my view, William did not make use of it. The pacemaker is doing his job and Billy Loughnane is going plenty quick enough, but you can see William still taking his horse back, back, and back again. The horse has not relaxed properly, in my opinion, and he is far too far off the pace. Watch the full show for the full analysis of Talk Of New York This horse has form around horses like Bow Echo and Gstaad, and in a Group 3 I think he should be winning a race like this. Watch William’s body language: he still has not really asked the horse for everything, while Clifford Lee is already rolling along in front and getting his horse into top gear. William still has not fully committed. I do not know whether he thought he would pick them up handy, but honestly, even if he had been riding Bow Echo, I do not think he would have picked them up from there. The horse is a decent horse, but he did take back and all those lengths were surrendered, the task became very difficult. The horse was not that keen, and the pacemaker was already going plenty fast enough. It is only now that the horse is probably getting into top gear, but he has spent the whole race being told to slow down, slow down, slow down. Then, all of a sudden, he is asked for everything late, but the challenge comes too late. He is beaten half a length on the line, and if you backed him, you are entitled to feel frustrated. William Buick is a hell of a jockey, but in my opinion, he got this one very badly wrong.
