Johnson: No Rush With Well Chief

Owner David Johnson hopes the absence of Well Chief from the entries for the Queen Mother Champion Chase will convince everyone his top two-miler will miss the Cheltenham Festival.

The seven-year-old, trained by Martin Pipe, is currently enjoying a long rest even though the injury - heat in a foreleg - is described as minor.

Johnson declared: 'It´s doubtful he´s going to run this season and now people may believe me. If people back him on the exchanges they are crazy.

'He´s very well and if he was any other horse I would chance my arm because the injury is minor.

'But if I were to run him and he broke down I could lose him forever. He´s only seven, he´s still only a young horse.

'This should now allay people´s thoughts that he is going to run. The die is cast, he´s not entered and it takes temptation away from me as well!'

Well Chief defeated Kicking King in the 2004 Arkle Trophy and was runner-up to Moscow Flyer in the Queen Mother last March.

He has not raced since beating Azertyuiop in the Betfred Celebration Chase at Sandown in April.
