Johnston In Quest For The Plate

Mark Johnston's Golden Quest heads a high-class entry of 67 for the John Smith's Northumberland Plate, run on July 1 at Newcastle.

Boasting a total prize fund of £200,000, the two-mile handicap is unsurprisingly one of the major features of the racing calendar, with this year's renewal promising to be as competitive as ever.

A maximum field of 20 will go to post, with notable performers Ouninpohja, Unleash and Bulwark among those likely to attract support if making the starting line-up.

Ouninpohja acquitted himself well when second in a Musselburgh Listed contest this month, while Unleash may bid to repeat his 2003 success in this event.

Bulwark was a well-supported winner of a competitive Haydock handicap recently, where the two-mile trip proved right up his alley.

Many of the bigger stables are well represented at this stage, with Middleham handler Johnston holding an especially strong hand of six possibles.
