The Grey Gatsby is on course to make his third appearance in the Juddmonte International at York on Wednesday week.

Kevin Ryan's five-year-old finished runner-up to dual Derby winner Australia in the 2014 renewal of the 10-furlong Group One before gaining his revenge in the Irish Champion Stakes the following month.

The Grey Gatsby has failed to get his head in front since that Leopardstown triumph almost two years ago, but has run a number of excellent races in defeat, including when third behind shock winner Arabian Queen and the brilliant Golden Horn in this event 12 months ago.

He was disappointing on his first two starts of this season, but raised his game when encountering faster ground in last month's Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket, chasing home subsequent Goodwood Cup hero Big Orange.

Ryan said: "The Grey Gatsby is on target for the Juddmonte. He's in good order and we are hoping the weather stays fair and we get some good fast ground.

"He has run well in the last two years and has never run a bad race at York - we are hopeful that he can be competitive again."

The Hambleton-based trainer is planning a twin assault on the Coolmore Nunthorpe two days later.

Coral Charge winner Brando is set to test his powers at the highest level for the first time after chasing home last year's Nunthorpe heroine Mecca's Angel in the Sapphire Stakes at the Curragh last month, while stable companion Goken ran an excellent race in defeat when third in the King's Stand at Royal Ascot and has performed respectably in two outings since.

"The plan is to run Brando and Goken in the Nunthorpe. Both are in good form," Ryan added.

"Brando is an improving sprinter. He will have to improve again but I'm very happy with him.

"Goken ran very well at Royal Ascot and in the July Cup where he got no run.

"The ground was a bit quick for him (in the King George Stakes) at Goodwood last week."
