KEMPTON AND HAYDOCK FROZEN

Kempton became tomorrow`s first victim of the cold weather in Britain when racing was called off this morning.

An inspection revealed that the track was unfit due to frost.

'It went down to -5C overnight,' said clerk of the course Brian Clifford. 'And there is no prospect of a rise in temperature until after racing on Saturday.

'We delayed it in the hope that things would get better but in the end it was an easy decision.'

Four races on tomorrow`s jumps card were due to be shown live on Channel 4, including the #40,000 Tote Bookmakers Lanzarote Hurdle.

Haydock Park also fell to the current cold spell after officials found the track to be frozen at an inspection this afternoon.

Clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright said: 'We`ve abandoned. The course is frozen - it`s hopeless. You can walk on the ice in the water jump.

'The temperature is above freezing now but the back straight only gets about three hours of sunshine at this time of year and it has no chance of thawing.'

The card was to have featured the Bet Direct Peter Marsh Chase and the Red Square And Red Alert Energising Champion Hurdle Trial.
