Kalpana is set for her seasonal breakthrough attempt in the Unibet September Stakes at Kempton, but connections stress the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe remains the main target.

Kalpana preps for Arc with Kempton test

Andrew Balding’s filly captured this Group Three contest last year en route to Champions Day glory, and she has since posted strong efforts without winning in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, Pretty Polly Stakes and King George.

With the Arc just over four weeks away, owners Juddmonte are realistic about her chances on Saturday.

“It’s a stepping-stone towards the Arc… as long as our filly can run a good race and she shows she’s in good form, we’ll be happy and we’ll kick on to Longchamp,” said Juddmonte’s Barry Mahon.

Balding added that a win at Kempton would be the perfect confidence boost ahead of Paris.

Giavellotto poses major threat

Giavellotto, a proven all-weather performer, provides stiff opposition after finishing third in the Coronation Cup at Epsom. Trainer Marco Botti reports his charge is fit and fresh, with Hong Kong later in the season as his long-term aim.

“He’s two from two on the all-weather and has shown his best form when he runs fresh,” Botti noted. “She’s a very good filly, but we’re looking forward to seeing our horse back in action.”

The supporting feature at Kempton is the Group Three Unibet Sirenia Stakes, with Charlie Appleby’s Beckford’s Folly heading a field of 10.
