Karkari justifies favouritism for Lawlor

Odds-on favourite Karkari came home the comprehensive winner of the two mile two furlong maiden hurdle at Downpatrick by 12 lengths from Black Rock Lake Katys Girl fell at the last when 9/10 shot Karkari was upsides and this allowed Noel Lawlor's gelding to saunter home up the hill. Karkari was travelling much the better of the two at the time.

Kildare-based trained Lawlor said: "It wouldn't have been that good a maiden. He might go to Tramore or Kilbeggan next as he needs tight tracks. He likes a bit of cut in the ground.

"Alan (Crowe) gave him a great ride. Ideally he would have needed a bit of company at the end of the race as he idles a bit."
