Keen-going Kazakh D’arthel (10/11f) survived an early error to win Cork’s William Hill Each Way Rated Novice Chase today, scoring for trainer Gavin Cromwell under a fine ride from jockey Sean Flanagan.

The 2m1f race housed just four runners and after Kazakh D’arthel blundered at the first, he was settled behind the leaders for much of the race before moving clear of his rivals in the home straight to score by 2.75 lengths from Rockstown Girl .

Regarding the David L’Estrange-owned winner, Champion Chase-winner Flanagan reported “he is very forward-going and while he is brave, he isn’t ‘scopey-brave’. I think Philip’s horse (Enright, on Chosen Shant running left might have taken his eye off it a bit and after the early mistake, I was trying to keep a lid on him.

“After his Thurles fall earlier this year, it set him back a bit but he has been progressively learning on the job and today he settled fine. It was a step back in grade for him, the race was well picked and it was a great opportunity.”
