Trainer Harry Kelly will have a close eye on the weather forecast over the coming days as he contemplates launching his exciting bumper horse On Impulse over hurdles at Navan on Saturday.

The Flemensfirth gelding holds engagements in both maiden hurdles on the card but his target is not something Kelly will decide on until the last possible moment.

The Co Tipperary handler has never hidden his regard for the twice-raced five-year-old and he got off the mark at Thurles back in February after finishing a promising third on his debut.

"We entered him but he's a nice horse and we won't run him unless we think the ground is safe. At the minute they're giving it as good to firm, good in places," explained Kelly.

"They're supposed to be putting a lot of water on it but we're going to have to wait and see what they do."

Kelly rates the Navan track highly and would be keen to start off his useful prospect at the track.

He said: "It would be a lovely track to start him off on as he's a horse we like a lot and he jumps fierce well. So it certainly would be nice to start him off on one of the better tracks but we'll see what the weather does.

"We don't think he'd have a problem over either trip (entered over two miles and two and a half miles) - he's in the two of them just to have an option.

"He'd probably more than likely go for the two and a half I'd say, but we'll see. If we thought it might rain later in the day we might even wait for the two-miler (later on the card).

"Some of the tracks now, in fairness, are fierce well watered after a bit of controversy over the last couple of summers. If we thought it was safe and well spiked and watered it might be an option, but it'll have to be very safe."
