Killybegs Ready For HQ Challenge

Killybegs will attempt to gain a deserved victory in the VC Bet Challenge Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.

Having run out a convincing winner of the Craven at Headquarters in April, the Barry Hills-trained colt has yet to add to that victory in five subsequent outings this year.

He failed by the narrowest of margins to overhaul Caradak on his penultimate start, however, and confirmed himself a smart sort when only beaten four and a half lengths behind George Washington in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes last time.

'He's on course for the Challenge Stakes,' confirmed Charlie Hills, son and assistant to Barry.

'He's coming off the back of two very good runs now ? he's back to his best and he looks really well.'

Killybegs will be reverting to the specialist trip of seven furlongs for the first time since his two-year-old days but connections feel he has the necessary toe to be competitive.

'Everything's gone to plan since his last run and the seven furlongs should suit him well ? he's got plenty of speed anyway,' Hills added.
