Last season’s champion apprentice jockey James Ryan partnered his family’s Kool One (9/1) to a last-gasp success in Roscommon’s concluding Campbell's Bar Ballinlough Handicap today, scoring for trainer Conor Maxwell.

Carrying the colours of his father Kieran Ryan, Ryan junior improved Kool One to chase the leaders two furlongs out and having gone in late pursuit of leader Out On Friday inside the final furlong, finished well to edge ahead near the line.

Maxwell reported “he was good and Jimmy (James Ryan) was cool!

“Galway didn’t work out, he got trapped wide everywhere but we thought he had a chance going here. We were worried the ground might have dried out today but he got there in the end. On his hurdles form he looked to be on a nice mark.

“He has matured a helluva lot. Last season we went to Cheltenham and were unlucky to unseat and then went to Fairyhouse but probably should have let him off after Cheltenham.

“He’s after growing and maturing an awful lot so we took our time bringing him back. Galway didn’t work out but today did and the Lartigue Hurdle (at Listowel) is the plan. There is a maiden hurdle at Wexford next week so he might go there or else straight to the Lartigue.”
