Lalani spearheads Oaks one-two

Trainer Ed Dunlop enjoyed a memorable first visit to the Curragh as Lailani led home a 1-2 for his Newmarket yard in the Kildangan Stud Irish Oaks, writes Gareth O`Brien.

Supplemented at a cost of IR28,000 following an impressive victory over yesterday`s Magnet Cup winner Foreign Affairs at Epsom, the filly produced a power-packed finish under Frankie Dettori to overhaul stable-mate Mot Juste close home. Karsavina fared best of the Aidan O`Brien quartet in third, with favourite Relish The Though disappointing.

The victory represented an extension to four of a winning sequence that had previously consisted solely of handicaps, and fully vindicated connections` decision to add her to the line-up.

Dunlop, whose father John saddled sixth-placed Time Away, was understandably delighted with his first classic success in the British Isles.

'That was tremendous, and I really must thank Sheikh Maktoum for paying the supplementary fee. I thought she had it all to do from her low draw, but Frankie has given her a great ride,' he said.

Joe Mercer, racing manager to the winning owner, revealed that the Yorkshire Oaks is a strong possibility for the improving filly`s next outing.
