Large fines in prohibitive substance cases

The Turf Club dished out hefty fines today in three prohibitive substances cases with Gavin Cromwell receiving a €5,000 (plus costs) punishment for Crossdresser being found with traces of a ‘lasix type’ drug in his system after finishing a controversial close-up third behind No One Tells Me at the Punchestown Festival.

Philip Fenton was hit with a €3,000 (plus costs) fine after Dunguib tested positive for a ‘wormer dose’ after winning the Champion Bumper at the Punchestown Festival. The Presenting gelding loses the Grade 1 race, while the Michael Butler-trained Casco Bay has been disqualified from winning a Kilbeggan maiden hurdle last month. Butler was fined €500 (plus costs) for a case of ‘food contaminant’.

Turf Club chief executive Denis Egan said: ‘The Crossdresser and Dunguib cases were both the result of substances administered by employees and given to wrong horses in their respective stables. The committee is sending out a clear message of the seriousness of these cases as the trainers concerned didn’t exercise correct supervision over their horses.’
