Leading owner Fahd Salman dead

Prince Fahd Salman, the owner of 1991 Derby hero Generous, has died after suffering a heart attack last night.

His dark green silks were a familiar sight on racecourses up and down the country.

A nephew of Saudi Arabia`s King Fahd, Prince Fahd was the son of the governor of Riyadh region and served as the former deputy governor of the Eastern Region during the 1990-1991 Gulf War. The eldest of four brothers, he was Saudi Arabia`s home secretary.

Generous proved himself to be the champion middle-distance colt of his generation. As well as winning the premier Classic at Epsom, he won the Irish Derby and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes.

Generous was trained at Whatcombe by Paul Cole, who was devastated by the news.

'It`s a terrific shock,' he said this afternoon.

'It`s a big hole for me as he was such an important part of my life because he was a good friend and he was part of Whatcombe.

'I trained for him for more than 20 years. He was part of my life and part of Whatcombe. It`s a horrible thing.'

Other class horses to run in Prince Fahd`s famous colours included the brilliant filly Ramruma. Trained at Newmarket by Henry Cecil, she won the 1999 Vodafone Oaks, Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks.
