The concluding Knockhouse Stud Mares Bumper at Wexford today went to the Willie Mullins trained newcomer Letherbelucky under the trainer's son Patrick Mullins.

The daughter of Luso looks a well named sort having come out on the right side of a thrilling battle with Top Madam in the straight, eventually scoring by half a length.

Afterwards Mullins Snr said “that was a very brave performance – she has a nice pedigree, is a half sister to Muirhead and will be a nice mare for 'the paddocks' in time.

“She will go hurdling soon enough and will continue on the go for the summer. That is my fourth horse I've had for the Supreme Horse Racing Club and each has now won.

Mullins Jnr, who was partnering his 39th winner of the season and is set for another Champion Amateur's Title, has himself had success as a scribe recently, having been named the joint winner of the under-26 category in the 20th Wills Writing Awards. The article, published in last Saturday's Irish Field, is prescribed reading for anyone with a view on the Grand National debate.
