Longchamp trip tempts Irish Rookie

Martyn Meade will make a decision on Wednesday as to whether he lets Irish Rookie run in the French 1000 Guineas at Longchamp on Sunday.

The Newmarket handler is considering turning the daughter of Azamour out again quickly after she finished a respectable sixth in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Defeat in the fillies' Classic ended the three-year old's unbeaten run, having won both her previous starts at Newmarket last year.

Meade said: "I was thrilled to bits with Irish Rookie's run on Sunday as it was a big ask for her.

"She had only had two runs and was still a little bit green as it was the first time she was really put under pressure.

"I think she ran better than the 20-1 chance she was and hopefully she will come on for that.

"The ground was a bit too quick for her and she made her run when they hit the dip.

"She was just squeezed out a bit and she just lost her momentum and that was her race all over.

"If we had have been able to hold her up a bit until they hit the rising ground it might have been a better result.

"I wouldn't normally run a horse so quick again but we are going to have a look at the French 1000 Guineas because she has come out of the race so well.

"We will have a look and see what else is in it and decide."

Should Meade decide not to send last season's Montrose Fillies' Stakes winner over to France at the weekend, the trainer stressed he will be keeping Irish Rookie to a mile for the time being.

Meade said: "The problem is all her entries are for between a mile and a quarter and a mile and a half, but with the sort of speed she has shown we will probably stick to a mile.

"It is a bit of a problem as we didn't put her in the Coronation Stakes but we could always supplement her for that."

Hugo Palmer's New Providence is still in the mix, as is Tiggy Wiggy, a fine third at Newmarket.

Jonathan Portman's Royal Razalma and the Marco Botti duo of Astrelle and Alfajer still have the option.

The main hope for the home team is Jean-Claude Rouget's Ervedya, second to Found in the Marcel Boussac last season.
