Lungo starlets impress

Lenny Lungo`s two star-turns The Bajan Bandit and Direct Access continued their steady build up to the Cheltenham Festival next spring when maintaining their unbeaten records with the minimum of fuss under Tony Dobbin at Carlisle today.

But it could have been an even better day for the Carrutherstown team because The Phair Crier was travelling like a winner when inexplicably crumbling on landing after jumping the second last well in the Viacom Outdoor European Breeders` Fund `National Hunt` Novices` Hurdle won by Lazy But Lively.

The Bajan Bandit was making it six wins in a row in the Viacom Outdoor Novices` Hurdle and he justified the long odds laid on him with the minimum of fuss, taking up the running with four to jump and making the rest to pass the post with 13 lengths to spare over Karajan.

This was his second win over hurdles to add to four successes in bumpers, and with the Royal & SunAlliance Hurdle the likely Cheltenham target, Lungo went on: 'He needs further and he was only 90 per cent ready - he missed out the third last but jumped like a cat otherwise.

'He is not bad over two miles for a horse which is from a family of four mile chasers, and he will step up to two and a half miles now, probably at Ayr on December 10th - but we will be going easy with him so we will last through to March.'

Half-an-hour later Direct Access followed suit making his career record six out of six too without having to really break sweat, taking command going to three out and comfortably shaking off Idalgo De Guye who had the temerity to close the gap going to the last, to win by five lengths.

He has the Royal & SunAlliance Chase in his sights, and Lungo admitting to having a few butterflies in the stomach before both races, went on: 'A big horse like him will be better on less testing ground, if I could pick going for him it would be good to soft.

'He jumped even better than he did first time over fences, he was careful but came up when Tony asked him -I think he will stay three miles and I think he will go that trip next time.'

Dobbin observed: 'He jumped super and I got a lead longer than I expected.'

All three horses carry the colours of David Stevenson`s Ashleybank Investments Ltd, and the fall of The Phair Crier who escaped unscathed as did Dobbin, apart it was a marvellous 48 hours for the owner who also had two winners at Wetherby on Wednesday, his 60th birthday.
