Matriarchal was strong off the front at 14/1 in the Irish Stallion Farm EBF Fillies Maiden for juveniles over five furlongs in Navan.

The Sioux Nation filly was joined by Big Negotiator a furlong and a-half down, but toughed way into the sole lead with 150 yards to go. She kept on well for Andrew Slattery to hold fast-finishing Cleodolinda (8/1) by half a length.

Owner/trainer Josh Halley said: "I was actually a little worried about the ground after a bit of rain - she actually managed it quite well.

"She ran in two good races and it just didn't work out for her those first two times. Today, we left her alone and she travelled away lovely for Andy and he didn't fight with her. She kept going.

"Every race she has improved, so we are very happy with her. We always thought a lot of her, she clocks good speeds at home and does her work really well. Every week is getting better for her.

"I think so (winners could come out of that race) and she has shown in her other races that she has improved. The other horses that beat her previously are very good horses. They are going to turn up in Ascot.

"Hopefully, she will keep improving and I think she will. She has a good mind and she will take plenty of galloping. She is just one of those very easy horses to train.

"Obviously, we trade and that is kind of our game at home. We are happy to keep if not (sold)."
