McCain Claims First Success

Donald McCain had his first winner since taking over from his father, Ginger, when Bearaway struck at Newton Abbot.

The nine-year-old made most of the running in the hands of Timmy Murphy and the 11-2 shot went on to beat Kings Brook by seven lengths.

McCain officially took over the reins of the family stable at Cholmondeley on Saturday.

McCain senior first took out a full licence in 1969 and is best remembered for saddling Red Rum to win three Grand Nationals in the 1970s.

The veteran trainer equalled Fred Rimell's record of four when Amberleigh House was successful in the Aintree marathon in 2004.
